The Client

Lifeness serves as a supportive assistant for healthcare professionals throughout all stages of obesity care. Utilizing a digital web app, healthcare providers can efficiently monitor patients, prepare for in-person visits, and deliver effective treatments. For patients, Lifeness offers a secure, user-friendly self-help tool via a mobile app. Since its pilot launch in 2019, we’ve been working closely with Lifeness to develop and improve their product.

The Challenge

Lifeness team knew that the key to better health lies not only in the food & weight tracking, but more importantly, in personalized motivation. Without sustained motivation and proper guidance, patients often stumble, leading to setbacks in their weight loss journey.

To address this, our team took on the challenge of rethinking the user experience and user journey of traditional weight loss apps. We designed specific features centered around personalized motivation, customized programs and instant support and guidance.

The Solution

User research and continuous feedback led to moving from a clinical tool focused on tracking to a more holistic platform that integrates mental health support and personalized motivation strategies. Our team focused on product ideation, user research, design, and development to sustain motivation throughout the weight loss process.

Customized weight loss programs

The goal is to provide patients with an easy-to-use digital tool for tracking lifestyle measures and maintaining motivation. Recognizing that motivation and well-being are crucial in combating obesity, Lifeness developed Personal Programs. These programs address varied motivational struggles among obesity patients with themes curated by healthcare professionals. Clinics can also create custom programs tailored to their patients’ needs using a special Program Creator.

Programs are determined by a short patient survey to align with specific needs and challenges, ranging from medical-focused programs like gastric bypass preparation to psychological aspects like emotional eating. Each program includes modules such as mood and well-being surveys, medical assessments, journaling, AI-based food photo recognition, curated articles, and sports data logging.

Personalized weekly focus & review

To maintain long-term motivation, Lifeness users are able to establish a focus area for a week and evaluate their progress. They are reminded about the goal every day, and at the end, they can summarize and see their efforts. Users also have access to the Lifeness Library, filled with curated content on health, diet, and motivation, supporting users in maintaining a positive outlook.

AI food recognition

To maintain patient motivation and make diet tracking even easier, we developed a new AI feature that can identify foods from photos, simplifying calorie counting and nutrient tracking. AI food recognition not only reduces the manual effort required from patients but also increases engagement by making the process more interactive.

Personal AI assistant

An AI-powered chatbot, Livvy, was introduced to provide patients with instant support and guidance. Built on a curated knowledge base, Livvy provides research-based, high-quality responses helping patients stay engaged and committed to their goals.

Doctor-patient communication

Sometimes patients need to contact their PA as soon as possible. To enable direct and swift doctor-patient communication, Lifeness is equipped with a dedicated instant messaging option. 

Security inside and out

Because Lifeness stores sensitive and, at times, very personal data, we equipped the app with a password & PIN option. The app also supports BankID authentication, which is indispensable for the app to be used by Clinics and Health Professionals. 

The outcomes

Initially deployed in a single clinic, Lifeness has expanded its reach to several clinics, positively impacting more than 1000 of patients. Its role in improving remote treatment management has been particularly valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing for continuous patient support despite restrictions. 

Lifeness team has won several awards, including the Arctic Accelerator 2021 program and the Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2021 competition, proving their innovative approach to obesity care.
